Introduction

I literally googled green slime and took the first image, seriously.

Zac is a gank focused damage tank, unlike most of the other tanks he begins ganking as early as level 3 and isn't reliant on his ult to get reliable ganks off however again unlike most of the tank he doesn't have the best innate CC and relies more on his damage output to be relevant. A high damage tank with a unique kit and the longest range non-ult engage in the game makes Zac a really fun and different paced tank jungler.

Pros

  • Longest range non ult engage in the game
  • Excellent ganks from level 3
  • Amazing sustain
  • High damage for a tank
  • Revive passive gives many second chances
  • Extremely versatile builds

Cons

  • Passive healing blobs are really difficult to utilize in combat
  • Passive revive is very unreliable, a mage with autos can kill it alone early game.
  • Anti-synergy with wombo combo comps
  • Late game isn't as great compared to other tanks
  • E can be interrupted midflight by any displacement and nullified

Runes

Zac is probably one of the most versatile tanks when it comes to his set up so you are going to see a fair few options to pick from here.

Quintessences

- These are my typical quints to take on a tank since you build a ton of health and they have extra synergy with the Cinderhulk passive.

- Standard jungle tank quints although I usually don't go for them on Zac since he has his E for movement although they are still good.

- As a damage tank with 4 AP ratios, flat AP quints or magic pen quints are really strong if you are going to go an offensive based build for the game.

----------------------

Marks

Zac needs no AS to help clear the jungle as he has a good AoE clear to begin with so Mpen marks it is to help with killing enemy champions.

----------------------

Seals

Health for the tank, no other choice!

----------------------

Glyphs

Unlike the other tanks Zac has difficulty itemizing much CDR despite highly valuing it because he won't get Frozen Heart so I like to cure that issue by investing in CDR with the blues. The lack of MR isn't that bad since Spirit Visage is very often an early item on him.
You can go scaling MR like all tanks would normally for the defensive glyphs.

18 Resolve

Recovery vs Unyielding

Take Unyielding here, not many champs will but really that little bit of regen isn't a big deal on Zac.

Explorer vs Tough Skin

Tough skin wins here since it helps a lot with the early clears against the jungle.

Runic Armour vs Veteran's Scars

Runic Armour is the point to take since 45 health is nothing to 8% more on your self healing is massive(along with all the other bonuses)

Insight vs Perseverance

I take perserverance here since its a really significant amount of regen.

Swiftness vs Legendary Guardian

As a high CC tank you really don't care much for the tenacity on Swiftness where as the added defenses from Guardian is really nice especially since you will be in the middle of the enemy team most of the time. Legendary Guardian it is.

Strength of Ages

I recommend SoA on Zac since of the tanks hes the one that autoattacks the least and will find it quite difficult to use Grasp as well as the others.

-----------------------------------------

12 Cunning

Wanderer vs Savagery

Savagery really isn't going to make a difference for you whereas the MS from Wanderer will help you get around the map a bit faster which is really important for a jungler. Take Wanderer.

Secret Stash

3 Meh points for you but this is the best of the 3 since the extra health helps with the first clear. No point is going to make much change though.

Merciless vs Meditation

You don't have mana so please don't take Meditation.

Bandit vs Dangerous Game

Bandit is a support mastery so you are taking Dangerous game.

Summoner Sets

Flash & Smite
There are simply no other options here. Every jungler should have Smite, it isn't a question of whether you need it or not! You need Smite for buff securing especially on Dragon/Baron. Flash on the other hand is also a 100% must, Whether it be Flashing to escape early counter jungling, catching people during ganks or most importantly late game engaging since Zac has Flash/R insec potential.

Item Builds

Starting Build(s)
Default Starting Build
2
Standard starting items for a jungler, these are just there to make the most difficult part of the jungle a little bit less painful and slow.
Final Build(s)
Standard Final Items
Zac's build choices are insanely versatile but the build you see here is the most aggressive but reasonable build that I go for, rarely will I ever put more focus on damage than what you see here although this is a perfect game build, often you will need to go full tank for the teams needs.

- Cinderhulk always, you are a tank first and damage dealer later, that and Runeglaive straight up sucks on Zac. As he has no clearing issues, Stalker's smite reigns supreme for the extra CC/Damage.

- Best all round armour item, compared to the competition there is no contest here. Frozen Heart has mana on it and Deadman's Plate is for those that benefit from the movement to help engage, Zac doesn't give a damn about that.

- The MR item of choice due to Zac's passive, his defensive steroid as a tank is his self healing and increasing the healing from that by 20% is a massive bonus along with the stats being great overall as well.

- Since Zac won't get to build that much AP his best damage stat is magic penetration, Liandry's has that and more with the passive burn making it easily one of his best choices for damage along with having some health on it too.

- As a Hybrid item this gives Zac an amazing amount of offensive power since he does a lot of magic damage in short range, he will always benefit from the aura and since he dives in being a tank that he is, his team will benefit too.

- I've got Sorcs here for the magic pen with the focus on damage but really it just depends on the game since Mercs or Tabi might be better or more necessary depending on how it is going.
Build Order
This build is hard to put into an order, what you see above is just... a standard safe order but really it is about what you need and when.

Cinderhulk should come first always but after that it varies,

Need damage? Get

Need Armour? Get

Need MR? Get

Need MR but also want to snowball with damage? Get

Skill Order

Cell Division

WUnstable Matter
EElastic Slingshot
RLet's Bounce!

E gets maxed first since its Zac's kit defining spell. His main CC and engage and its range scales MASSIVELY with rank, the difference between a rank 1 and 5 E in range is huge and too good to skip.

------------------------------

Q is maxed second since it has pretty good damage scaling per level along with increased slow and cooldown reduction.

------------------------------

W is maxed last since its just a damage spell, its low priority and if you want it to deal good damage it scales pretty good of AP anyway.

Skills

Cell Division

Zac has 2 passives to cover. The first one is a simple revive passive, when Zac hits 0 health and his passive is available he will split into 4 little blobs that have health/defence based off a percentage of Zac's totals. The blobs travel towards each other and after 8 seconds he will revive with 10-50% of his health based on how many blobs survived. This is a pretty good passive since its that second chance that demands extra time to kill you but as a revive passive it is by far the weakest since early/mid game even a mage with just autoattacks can kill all 4 blobs before they combine along with it being hard countered by Trailblazer as it just AoE's all the blobs down in 1 go, on the other hand Teleport can save the blobs and guarantee your revival.

Zac does not have a resource bar, instead all of his basic abilities cost 4% of his current health to cast but whenever a spell hits an enemy Zac releases a blob nearby, these blobs can be picked up(or squashed by enemies) by running over them, if Zac collects a blob he will heal for 4% of his MAX health. This is actually Zac's only defensive steroid as a tank, it isn't a shield or defensive stats but rather just mass sustain. This is a tricky passive to use since in teamfights the blobs go all over the place and its quite hard to stick to someone and collect them but thats part of mastering Zac!
Stretching Strike
This is a very simple and standard spell, its a short ranged "skillshot" that deals damage and slows every one hit, that is all there is to it. It is decent CC considering its a low cooldown and AoE.

Unstable Matter
This is Zac's sustained damage move, he instantly deals damage(flat+%max health) in a small area around him. It has a 5 second cooldown initially and every time a blob is collected the cooldown is reduced by 1 second so it ends up being a very spammable spell. It doesn't do much outside of aiding clears to begin with but as the game goes on it gets a respectable amount of damage on it(especially scaling with AP, it gains an extra 1% per 50 AP).

Elastic Slingshot
This is Zac's kit defining move, it is his engage, mobility and a large chunk of his initial burst. When cast(hold E) Zac roots himself and can launch himself in a large cone area infront of him. The ability requires to be charged, the max range you can jump increases the longer you charge the E. When released Zac slingshots himself to the area and will deal damage and knock up everyone hit by it for 1 second. This spells range is AMAZING, at rank 5 it is 1800 range and is the longest range non ultimate engage tool in the game, it is also what makes Zac a gank heavy jungler from level 3 and onwards.

Level 1 E versus a fully leveled E
Let's Bounce!
This is one of the best disruption ults in the game, Zac bounces 4 times when he casts this over ~4 seconds, each time he bounces he will deal damage and knock away any enemy he hits although enemies already hit by one bounce will not be knocked and only take half damage from consequent hits but will be slowed by 20% for 1 second. During the bounces Zac gains 20% increasing to 50% movement speed for the duration of the ultimate.

This ult is really just about causing chaos, Zac E's in and then just ults in the teamfight(usually knocking his initial target into his own team) and bounces all around the teamfight while creating tons of blobs and spamming his W. Due to W being castable during the ult and it creating up to 4 blobs itself, W spam during the ult adds up to a considerable amount of damage if the blobs are managed correctly.

No, your team cannot ride you as you ult.

Items

Before I start here I must remind you that Zac's build is insanely versatile and most items are actually pretty good on him so rather than listing a build I'm just going to give an overview of all the items I consider good on him and the few that aren't great.

Abyssal is a hybrid offence/defence item and for Zac it is one of the best offence items for him. The fact it comes with a nice chunk of MR is perfect for a tank and as far as offence goes, the 70 AP is good but the main bit is the -20 MR aura which will give Zac a massive boost not only to his own damage(which all takes place in the aura) but to his team since he is a frontliner and will be applying that aura for his team more than say a mage with Abyssal would.

I get this item almost every game even when going full tank due to its covering both roles so well. Generally it comes after a Haunting Guise and rarely will I buy it before Spirit Visage.

--------------------------------

As a tank it will often be your job to get an Aegis item. If the enemy team is heavy on the magic damage you can get one of these(most often its Locket since you are a tank first), whether it be before or after Spirit Visage is up to you but make sure your support doesn't intend to get one, if they do then I'd skip this for Spirit/Abyssal as your MR items.

--------------------------------

Best armour item for a tank hands down, the passives on this are amazing and too good to skip. 10% less crit damage/15% attack speed slow will go a long way in helping you survive the enemy ADC and the active on it is a really appreciated extra form of CC on Zac's kit which could do with a little bit more so that he stays near his targets.

--------------------------------

Stalker's is hands down the best, the ranged slow is amazing for ganking and it does a nice amount of true damage, Trailblazer is worthless since Zac has a good, fast and high sustain clear. Cinderhulk is just the obvious choice for the enchantment, you are a tank and you want the health along with the magic damage aura on a champion who typically sits on his enemies.

--------------------------------

Although I don't get this that often, if you are going full blown damage Rylai's goes really well with the Liandrys as well as keeping you a bit tanky with its high health. The slow is mainly for the W which will apply a 40% slow for one second which is quite significant considering how much you will spam it.

--------------------------------

After Randuins this is likely my next armour item if I really feel I need another, it goes well with Zac because its passive is magic damage on a tank that builds a decent amount of magic penetration so he can get quite the offensive use out of it. Main reason it beats Deadmans Plate is that the DMP passive is terrible on Zac.

--------------------------------

If the enemy team has balanced damage types but a lot of it(our you are your teams only tanky champ and really need to be that immovable object for them) then this is a great finisher after Spirit/Randuins to make you a high health monster that refuses to die.

--------------------------------

Hands down best MR item for Zac, Health+MR are obviously good for a tank but it comes with CDR which is hard for Zac to itemize for and the healing bonus passive bumps his passive blob healing from 4% to 4.8% per blob, 20% more healing on a champ that heals this much is a massive jump in sustain and durability.

--------------------------------

Liandry's for tanks is the best damage item available, it is the perfect grouping of stats and passives. It gives health which every tank wants, magic pen when is a damage stat tanks desperately need but struggle to get and a burn passive that doubles up on CC'd targets(tanks have the CC) which gives them damage that scales off their enemies rather than their own damage/AP. Best damage item for Zac especially with the innate slows on his Q/R.

--------------------------------

Yes, I'm serious. A full AP Zac build benefits massively from the Hourglass since you can pop it immediately after jumping in to avoid getting burst down too quickly for your team to react.

--------------------------------

Which you get here is simple, typically I go sorc's for the magic pen but if I feel I really need it I'll get Tabi against high physical damage teams and Mercs against high CC or magic damage teams.

--------------------------------

AVOID

This is just inferior to Spirit/Abyssal/Locket for Zac in every area, the value of this item is the spellshield which you just don't give a damn about as a tank.

--------------------------------

It has mana on it!

--------------------------------

It also has mana on it!

--------------------------------

Good raw defensive stats with the armour and health but the passive on this item is total crap for Zac, he has no need for the movement speed to help him engage when he has his E which just makes this a glorified stat stick and in that case it just ends up as an inferior armour choice to Thornmail.

General

Usually I'd feature some fanart, but all Zac fanart is NSFW shipping him with Riven for some reason...

Zac can start anywhere, really it's up to you and the order really doesn't matter since you have no requirements with any buffs. Just start either at Gromp or Krugs, ideally double jungle with your toplaner giving them all the XP/Gold on the first camp. If you are starting on blue side you can give your toplaner the blue instead of Gromp if they benefit from it. Zac has a good clear and won't have any trouble just clearing everything he passes by. I usually go for my first gank at level 3 and after that it is down to the game, I can't really do a guide on how to jungle itself since its so open but the general idea is go to a lane and gank them then do some camps, repeat. Really it's not that complicated!

When it comes to late game, you will want to either initiate picks(with back up, not alone) or teamfights. Zac is a diver and disruptor, most of the time he will engage with E and then R around the teamfight hitting as many people as possible to cause chaos then will focus on trying to kill and annoy anyone here is on, rarely is he a peeler for his team but it isn't something he can't do. Zac peeling with R is really quite awesome especially against a Rengar.

The descriptions for your item and rune choices are great; I haven't considered % health quints before. Wish I had enough rune pages to have room to try it out, though it could be interesting to set it up for a Team Builder game. I usually just go with MR blues and CDR quints because I can use those on more other champs.

I think think "general" section is pretty lacking though. Is this still WIP? If you're hoping for people to come to this guide (rather than only using it for the great itemization tips), it might help to include at least small sections on things like jungle micro, gank paths, and champion synergies (even obvious ones like Yasuo and Orianna for very new players).

Holy crap the amount of art on that profile that I recognise ... especially a certain *ahem* cait picture. I decided to throw one on the guide since its a bit lacking in art.

As for Q over W, I max Q cause it gains CDR as well as slow scaling providing more utility along with the fact that W generally hits its cap even at rank 1 against large monsters where its damage matters the most.

Awesome guide man, thanks for making this :)

Personally I'd go with AP quinns, and scaling W second because it has more damage. Or do you prefer to level up Q first for the slow for ganking?

Also I guess the Riven x Zac ship is just very popular lol (guilty pleasure of mine as well ;p Someone introduced me to the pairing, and I commissioned a few pictures with them as well :))However there is also a ton of cute art with them: http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Come-what-may-442475673 http://ptcrow.deviantart.com/art/Zac-X-Riven-We-just-got-married-412496794 http://ptcrow.deviantart.com/art/Arcade-Zac-X-Riven-513854961 http://naivascha.deviantart.com/art/Happy-Valentine-s-Day-513863426 http://wnsdud34.deviantart.com/art/Zac-X-Riven-443348487 http://5-ish.deviantart.com/art/Commission-epyonavenger-476097638 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Hot-cocoa-421922188 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Cheering-Zac-and-Riven-by-zulidoodles-442001417 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Hey-buddy-hands-of-the-lady-496147568 http://yomitrooper.deviantart.com/art/Zac-s-Splash-Fight-547258125 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Romantic-balloon-ride-392437719 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/OTP-INCOMIIIING-486513260 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Cheers-536546573 http://sunnyrays.deviantart.com/art/Zac-Riven-395031228 http://5-ish.deviantart.com/art/Commission-nielspeterdejong-Zac-x-Riven-again-481799706 http://cloudxmoe.deviantart.com/art/Zac-x-Riven-508345950 http://ricegnat.deviantart.com/art/Party-Crashers-462385053 http://oppsspspsp.deviantart.com/art/riven-x-zac-495699549 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/ZAC-STAAAAHP-GIF-554831765 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Happy-Riven-GIF-440308967 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Heads-up-405080191 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/Fields-of-justice-468927160 http://dweynie.deviantart.com/art/Zac-x-Riven-Comic-398596388 http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/I-hate-it-when-this-happens-391130862 which you could use ;p (and semi naughty? http://nielspeterdejong.deviantart.com/art/The-time-for-talk-is-over-431596091 )
